Medical Facts...and Fiction
The goal of this section is to define the problem, the epidemic of obesity in this country in adults and in children. Data in this section are designed for the health care professions as well as for the public, with relevant references. In this regard, we will not re-invent the wheel, but will access all useful sources already published...invoking the "Fair Use Doctrine" for this educational effort when actual citations are not given. Of course, with over 50 years of clinical experience represented among the professional complement of this family enterprise, in addition to the experience of guest contributors, we will often express our own insights and opinions.

Much of the following information is adopted, with thanks, from a health news-letter offered by the doctors of Harvard Medical School.
- There is no quality control by the FDA or by anyone else over "Health Supplements" - even with regard to conntaminants!
- Caffeine can remain in the body for up to 12 hours; so, think of that when you need relaxation and sleep.
- The only "Fountain of Youth"...of at least of long life...is in calorie reduction, once you have picked your parents.
- Trans fats, and partially de-hydrogenated stuff is truly "Gorilla Glue" for your arteries. Read labels!
- Decaffeinating tea does reduce healthful Flavonoids.
- Brisk walking (3-4 miles/hour) for 20-30 minutes, 3-4 times weekly, is just as good for your general and vascular health as is heavier exercise...and much more convenient.
- It has been found that Vitamin D is much more important to general health than formerly recognized - and that most people are deficient in it. "Talk to your doctor...."
- Ibuprofen (Motrin, etc,) has been found to reduce the development of amyloid plaques in Alzheimer's Disease. Does Aspirin do the same thing? But don't use Aspirin and NSAID's together. The latter negates the heart-healthy effects of the former.
- Here's a good RX for healthy Flavinoids: Green Tea, Red Wine, Dark Chocolate. That's pretty painless!
- Chelation is in no way helpful - and may well be harmful.
- Increased use of sodas reduces bone health by several mechanisms. Drink water.
- Too many Americans, including kids, are lacking sufficient Calcium in their diet: 55% of people over the age of 55 years old have osteoporosis or osteopenia.
- Raw apples contain many Phytonutrients. "An apple a day...."
- Cooking tomatoes actually increrases the concentration of healthful Lycopenes. So, MANGIA, MANGIA.
